*North Shore Family Respite Centre
The Health and Home Care Society of BC (Care BC) is a not-for-profit organization working in partnership with the City of North Vancouver (City) and the Catalyst Community Developments Society (Catalyst) to build a Family Respite Centre (FRC) on land owned by the City on East 2nd and St. Georges Ave in Lower Lonsdale in North Vancouver.
The FRC will provide temporary Adult Day Care and Overnight Respite Care for seniors diagnosed with dementia, who are living at home, thereby enabling their caregivers to get the periods of “respite” or the rest they require to continue to care for their loved ones at home. Too frequently, the alternative is a visit to the emergency, followed by admission into an acute care hospital bed, and placement in a long-term care bed. Vancouver Coastal Health has agreed to fund the annual operating costs of the FRC.
The FRC will be owned and operated for 60 years by Care BC and located on the ground level of a 6-storey tower in a custom-designed, homelike setting which will include 18 private bedrooms with ensuite, and 25 Adult Day Care Program spaces. Eighty-nine affordable housing units, which will be owned and operated by Catalyst, will be constructed above the FRC.
Completion of the site is anticipated in the fall of 2025. Care BC has fundraised approximately $8.5 million of the estimated $12 million total project costs needed to develop and complete the Centre.
